and is the true experience to the first meeting with
the Himalayas. Blessed with magnificent glaciers, majestic

the adventure seekers with sports that are offered like
River Rafting, mountaineering, skiing and trekking;
and a picturesque destination for the nature lovers
with breathtaking panoramic view of Himalayas, and the

other than the Capital of the state Dehradun, like Mussorie

its Tigers and wildlife is another reason to visit the
state. No part of the state lacks in the natural splendour
that Mother Nature has bestowed on the state and travel
to Uttaranchal certainly leaves behind the most beautiful
memories.
About Uttaranchal: This state was till recently a part
of the bigger state of the northern region Uttar Pradesh.
It was given the present shape and named Uttaranchal
in November 2000 and became the 27th Indian state with
independent state assembly. Earlier though many a rulers
have taken turns to rule this place known as Devbhoomi,
the land of Gods, because of the innumerous holy site
in the small place. The regions of Uttaranchal find
a mention in the epics of Mahabharata and the dynasties
like the Kushan, Kanishka, Gupta and the local tribal
dynasties have ruled the state till the British arrived.
The place which has most of the hill stations, valley
of flowers and the four holy places, what else would
a tourist want but to have an assorted platter from
natural beauty to adventure sports and from holy sites
to snow clad mountains.
Uttaranchal is a beautiful and calm state with abundance
in natural beauty. The rivers flowing through the state
form a fertile land a long with the climatic conditions.
Uttaranchal is undoubtedly India's most beautiful canvas.
The main attraction to this place is the un-spoilt and
unexploited beauty and the serene calmness of Uttaranchal.
The green valleys and the snow-clad peaks with wonderful
panoramic view till the eyes can reach, is mesmerizing
and spell binding as well. Uttaranchal has a wonderful
cultural and traditional heritage that has been followed
for centuries. The people of Uttaranchal are warm and
smiling and trying to live through the harsh climatic
conditions. The cuisine is essentially north Indian
very much similar to the rest of the Northern parts
of the India. Items made of wool are easily available

Almora
Situated at an elevation of 5400 ft, in the Kumaon
Hills, Almora is well known for its healthy climate.
Balo Kalyan Chand, the Raja of Champawat, founded the
town of Almora about 1560 AD. Almora is cultural centre
of Kumaon and a picturesque mountain resort. Sunrise
offers a particularly beautiful view of the greater
Himalayas. Almora is also called a town of temples.
Situated in the center of the town is the temple of
Goddess Nanda Devi. Unlike Shimla, Ranikhet and Nainital
that were developed by the English, Almora is a hill
station totally developed by the Indians. Almora is
a town in the shape of a horseshoe. It is on a 5 km
long mountain range. It has its own historical, cultural
and political importance. Once upon a time, it was the
capital of Kumaon.
The descendents from the Katyur dynasty and the Chand
dynasty ruled here in the old times. The forts, other
historical monuments, courts and governmental offices
are still present today. The two rivers, Kaushik (Koshi)
and Shalmali (Suyal) flow near the town. The snow capped
peaks of the Himalayas look like a long train of ice
and snow from here.

waters of the confluence. Fasting and chanting, they
worship Siva in the temple built for Him many centuries
ago. During the Katyuri rule, it was one of the administrative
centres, near their capital.
Badrinath - Kedarnath
The temples of Shiva and Vishnu at Kedarnath and Badrinath
have been the destination of pilgrims for centuries.
Once reached after tortuous treks but easily Accessible
today by road. At Uttarkashi at a height of over 3000
metres the snow melts to form the sacred rivers of Ganga
and Yamuna is a deep recess of the mountains. The route
to the two sources begins at Rishikesh and passes ancient
temples and Valleys along the way. The Shrines are open
from 1st week of May up to Diwali day.
Badrinath is one of the four Dhams; a devout Hindu
has to visit in his lifetime to attain salvation. One
of Hinduism's holiest sites, it was founded by Sri Shankaracharya,
in the ninth century. The temple, also known as Badri
Narayan, is dedicated to Vishnu, who is said to have
done penance in the mythical Brindavan that once covered
the mountains of Uttarakhand.
Known as "Tapobhumi", a land of meditation
and penance, and "Bhubaikunth", heaven on
earth, it is surrounded on either side, by two mountain
ranges known as Nar and Narayan, with the Neelkanth
peak, providing a spectacular backdrop. Facing the Badrinath
temple is a hot water spring, known as "Tapt Kund".
Other famous springs, here, are the Narad Kund and the
Surya Kund. Badrinath is presided over by a Namboothiri
Brahman from Kerala, the Rawal, who also acts as the
head priest for Kedarnath.
Kedarnath is the most important Hindu shrine in Himalayas,
and among the major Shiva temples, of the country. Located
at the source of the river Mandakini, Kedarnath is one
of the twelve Jyothirlingas, of Lord Shiva, and one
of the Panch Kedars. Mythology identifies the deity
at Kedarnath temple, with the rump of a bull, a form
assumed by Lord Shiva, when eluding the Pandavas, who
had come for repentance for killing their kith and kin,
in the great battle of Kurukshetra. It is believed that
the Pandavas constructed the temple of Kedarnath. At
the entrance of the temple, is the statue of Nandi,
the divine bull of Shiva. The wall inside the temple
is exquisitely carved with images, and the temple houses
a shiva lingam, which is worshipped by hordes of pilgrims.
At the approach of winters in the month of November,
the holy statue of Lord Shiva, is carried down from
Garhwal (Kedarkhand) to Ukhimath, and is reinstated
at Kedarnath, in the first week of May. It is at this
time, that the doors of the temple are thrown open to
pilgrims, who flock from all parts of India, for a holy
pilgrimage. Legends notwithstanding, the shrine of Kedarnath
is very scenically placed, and is surrounded by lofty,
snow - covered mountains, and grassy meadows covering
the valleys. Immediately behind the temple, is the high
Keadardome peak, which can be sighted from great distances?
The sight of the temple and the peak with its perpetual
snows is, simply, an enthralling sight.

PLACES OF INTEREST - Badrinath
Mana Village - 3 km from Badrinath, this is the last
village of India on the Indo-Tibetan border. The Indo-Mongolian
tribe set up this village. A population of 200 people
lives here. As soon as the gates of Badrinath open,
they come here and as soon as they close, they go down
to the plains where they live for the rest of the year.
In this way they live a dual family life. These people
are very hardworking and industrious. They wherein the
women knit and weave sweaters, carpets, etc run a small-scale
industry of woollen clothes. They are very attached
to their culture and traditions. Earlier they traded
with Tibet but in 1962 this was shut down. Tourists
come in plenty to this quaint village.
Bheem Bridge - A short distance from Mana Village a
natural bridge made of a huge boulder, over the river
Saraswathi is seen. The story goes that Bheem; one of
the Pandava brothers put it there. The view of this
extraordinary bridge and the din of the flowing river
make this place interesting.
Vasudhara Falls - 5 km after Bheem Bridge this astonishingly
high waterfall is very attractive. The most interesting
aspect about this place is that all the water here becomes
vapour and vanishes into the atmosphere. The view looks
like the Ganges is descending from the sky.
Satopanth Lake - Satopanth Lake is 18 km from Mana
Village amidst the difficult areas of Himalayas. The
water in the lake is very calm. On the banks of this
lake are innumerable lotus flowers. To get here one
has to come via Lakshmi Forest. To return from here
to Badrinath on foot it takes 3 days.
Pandukesar - Pandukesar 20 km from Badrinath, this
is a memorial for the Pandavas. Two temples here have
intricate carvings. This village is quite big. During
the season one finds huge crowds here.
Govind Ghat - This is 2 km before Pandukesar and is
the gateway for the Hem Kund Lake and the internationally
well-known Valley of the Flowers. The Hem Kund Saheb
is 20 km by foot from here. There we find a Sikh Temple
and some hotels. The Valley of the Flowers is a 17 km
walk.
Hanuman Chatti - 13 km before Badrinath this temple
is situated in a village. Nearby is a nursery of the
rare birch tree.
Kheerau Valley - As soon as you cross the bridge on
the Alaknanda River from Hanuman Chatti to Benakuli,
this extremely beautiful valley comes into view. 4 km
from here is the Kheerau village where the local people
stay for 4-5 months. Many other interesting spots are
there about the village like Tatapani, Unyani Lake etc.
Kagbhushandi Lake - On the Valley of Flowers Road,
a 20 km trek from a village called Bhyundar is a vast
lake, the beauty of which is amazing. Since getting
here is very difficult, very few tourists are found
here.
Joshimath - 42 km from Badrinath this place is set
to have been visited in the 18th century by Shankaracharya
from the state of Kerala. He meditated here and founded
a Mutt called Jyotir math or Joshimath. Here orchards
of apples, apricots, peaches and lemon have to be seen
to be believed. Many hotels and tourist bungalows are
available to stay.
Tapt Kund, Surya Kund, Narad Kund - On the banks of
the river Alaknanda, are many natural hot water springs,
where people bathe before they enter the temples.
PLACES OF INTEREST - Kedarnathh
Gandhi Sarovar - About three kilometers away in the
valley formed by the Kedarnath massif, is Chorabhari
Tal. This lake has been renamed Gandhi Sarovar after
the Mahatma's ashes were immersed in Lake. According
to the legend this is where Yudhishthir, the eldest
of the Pandavas, is said to have departed to heaven.
Gaurikund - Base for a trek to Kedarnath & serves
as a roadhead, the village has hot springs of medicinal
values & a temple dedicated to Gauri.
Vasuki Tal - Vasuki Tal is 6 km. at 4135 m above sea
level, this lake is extraordinary, surrounded by high
mountains and offering an excellent view of the Chaukhamba
peaks.
Triyuginarayan - Triyuginarayan is the mythological
venue where the wedding of Lord Shiva and Parvati was
solemnized. It is a short trek of 5 km from Son Prayag.
An eternal flame, which is said to have been the witness
to the marriage, burns in front of the temple even today.
Gupt Kashi - Gupt Kashi is 49 km Famous for the temples
of Ardhnarishwar and Vishwanathji.
Ukhimath - 60 km winter home of Lord Kedarnath temple,
and the seat of the Rawal of Kedarnath during winter
months.
Chopta - Situated on the Gopeshwar Ukhimath road about
40 km from Gopeshwar at an altitude of about 2500 m
above sea level, Chopta is one of the most picturesque
spots in the entire Garhwal region. It provides a breathtaking
view of Himalayan ranges surrounding it
Deoria Tal - At an altitude of 2,440 m, this beautiful
lake is situated on the Chopta - Ukhimath motor road.
In the early morning, the snow-capped peaks are clearly
reflected on the lake waters. This lake also provides
an excellent venue for angling, as well as bird watching.
Panch Kedar - The five most important temples of Lord
Shiva are in garhwal Himalayas.
The Kedar Massif - This is an outstanding massif formed
by the three major mountains - Kedar Dome. Bharatekuntha
at 6578 M is connected to Kedarnath to the East, by
a long and dangerous avalanche ridden ridge. At 6000
meters it looks stunning and has several glacial flows,
one of which is the Mandakini glacier running down its
ridges. A deep ridge connects Kedarnath and Kedardome.
Kedar Dome at 6831 Meters presents a fair challenge
to climbers. Kedarnath is however, a difficult peak
to climb. At 6940 Meters it is just beneath the level
where the oxygen layer is thin. Anyone interested in
a good day trek, could take the well-travelled path
from behind the temple toward Bharatekuntha.
Bageshwar
Situated at the confluence of rivers Saryu, Gomti and
latent Bhagirathi, lies the holy township of Bageshwar;
also revered as the pious land associated with Lord
Sadashiva, the redeemer of all sins. As the puranas
state, this undoubtedly is a place capable of liberating
one from the eternal bondage of births & deaths.
With the east and west flanked by the Bhileswar and
Nileshwar mountains and surrounded by Suraj Kund in
the north and Agni Kund in the south, this land of Lord
Shankar is of great religious, historic and political
significance. Since time immemorial, this place has
been the symbol of faith for the entire Uttranchal region.
Because of its spiritual magnetism, it has attracted
many saintly men and numerous patriots who have always
been ready to lay down everything for the sake of their
revered motherland.
The temple of Bagnath situated here is venerated by
one and all. Devotees gather here on every Monday of
the holy month of Shravan to worship the Lord, who is
also known as the remover of sorrows. During the fairs
of Uttarayani and Shivratri, it becomes very difficult
to control the hoards of devotees who come to attend
these fairs from far and near.
The Nilaparvat, situated between the rivers Saryu and
Gomti is inhabited by all the 33 crore Gods of the Hindu
pantheon, the celestial being like Siddha, Gandharva,
Vidyadhar, Urvashi etc. and manu sages. Irrigated by
the Saryu, the Nilaparvat is held to be more important
than the Vindhyachal. Those who desire to embrace death
at place between Surya Kund and Agni Kund, become equivalent
to the Gods by attaining salvation at the feet of Lord
Shiva himself.
During the reign of the Chands, the Shiva temple was
constructed at Bageshwar. Legend has it that when repeated
attempts to install a Shiv Linga proved futile, it was
Shri Manorath Pandey of Palayn village who succeeded
in installing the idol after performing penance on the
Shivratri. From then onwards, a massive fair is held
on Shivratri each year to commemorate the event.

Lord", an epithet of Lord Siva. This temple was
erected by the Kumaun king, Laxmi Chand, about 1450
A.D., but there is an interesting Sanskrit inscription
there of a far earlier date. Th temple is flooded with
devotees on the annual occasion of Shivratri. This place
has a cluster of temples. Prominent amoug these temples

temple, Hanuman temple, Durga temple, Kalika temple,

temple.
Baijnath - The temples at Baijnath proper are situated
on the left bank of the Gomti. On the way to the main
temple, just below the house the Mahanta, is the temple
of Bamani (A corrupt form of Sanskrit Brahmani). Tradition
of the place says that it was built by Brahmin widow
and was dedicated by her to God Shiva. Another story
states that a Brahmin woman who was kidnapped by a Kshatriya
built the temple in favour of Shiva for the expiation
of her sins. There is an idol of Shiva inside the temple.
It has no inscriptions. The construction of the temple
does not differ from that of the Tailihata group, so
it may also be said to belong the same period. The main
temple, dedicated to Baijnath or Vaidhyanatha (a name
of Shiva), which gives its name to the present village,
is situated near the Gomti. The temple is approached
from the riverside by a flight of steps made of stones
constructed by the orders of Katyuri queen. The place
was and is a bathing place of the inhabitants who have
now made a Kachha pond near the temple. Baijnath is
19 KMs away from Kausani and 26 kms from Bageshwer.
One it used to be the capital of the Katyuri dynasty
of kings and the place was then called Kartikyapura.

Excursions
KAUSANI - Standing 1890 mts above the sea level, Kausani
is nature's own reserve of solitudes and greenery. Even
the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi has contemplated
on the beauty of this region. Several snow capped peaks
stand in a stately row, over 300 kms in length, shining
against the azure sky making the horizon as seen from
Kausani and enviable spectacale. The glory of the snow
crowned Himalayan range reaches it's pinnacle when the
sun rays turn them into crimson and gold. Mahatma Gandhi,
who spent 12 days in 1929 at Kausani, penned his memorable
commentary on the Geeta-Ana-Sakti yoga inspired by the
scenic grandeur of this richly gifted spot. The guest
house where the Mahatama stayed is now know as Anasakti
Ashram. Hindi poet laureate Sumitranandan Pant was born
at Kausani. Some of his early poems composed here have
described nature in its myriad manifestations. There
is small museum to earmark that sacred spot. Kausani
is ideal for those who seek to escape from the din and
dust, hustle and bustle of big cities and wish to spend
a quiet holiday in the lap of nature. Indeed, Kausani
is a veritable heaven of beauty to which an excursion
must be made on visiting Kumaun. The wide expanse of
the famous Katyur Valley lies in front of it as you
wake up to experience the Kausani sunrise.

from Kausani and 26 kms from Bageshwer, is the small
but ancient town of Baijnath. It was once upon a time
the capital of the Katyuri dynasty of kings and the
place was then called Kartikyapura. In Kumaun socio
cultural region, Baijnath is one among remote antiquity
and of historical importance. The remnants of those
glorious days lies at the bank of the Gomti river in
the form of a group of temples. The temple is famous
for it's ancient and magnificent stone idol of the Hindu

battle ground where 'Kauravas' and 'Pandavas' had fought.
There exists a natural ground half a km in breadth.
The Himalaya is so near that one can get an excellent
view of the ranges. To reach Pandusthal, a bus service
is available from Gadud to Jakheda. From Jakheda it
is 20 km trek through the mountains.
VIJAYPUR - It is situated at a distance of 30 kms from
Bageshwer town. One can have a panaromic view of the
snow capped Himalayan range from here. Because of it's
high altitude the view is breath taking.

the capital of the rulers of the Chand dynasty, is famous
for its natural beauty and well-known temples. The ancient
fort, now houses headquarters of the Tehsil office.
A historical spot, Champawat has many well-known temples
of high artistic value. The Baleshwar temple is the
noted attraction of Champawat. The Nagnath temple at
Champawat is also an excellent example of ancient architecture
of Kumaon. The story of Golla Devta is also associated
with Gorilla Chaur of Champawat. It was in Champawat
that Lord Vishnu is said to have appeared as 'Kurma
avatar' (incarnation as tortoise). This hill is also
known as Mt. Kandev. There is a small fort at Champawat.
Jim Corbett had come to this region in the first decade
of the twentieth century in order to hunt for man-eating
tigers.

BALESHWAR TEMPLE - Baleshwar, situated at Champawat
is the most artistic temple of the district. There are
evidences that the early kings of the Chand dynasty
built the group of temples dedicated to Baleshwar, Ratneshwar
and Champawati Durga. The temple once had intricate
structural features and a sanctuary with a 'mandap'.
The intricate carving still visible on the ceilings
of these temples is an evidence of their ancient glory
and artistic excellence.
GWAL DEVTA - A deity of widespread faith and influence,
Gwal Devta also known as Goril or Goll, is considered
to be the presiding deity of justice. It is believed
that when approached, Gwal Devta dispenses justice to
a helpless victim of injustice and cruelty. Historically,
Goril a Katyuric prince of Champawat, known for his
unwavering justice and fair play, was himself a victim
of planned conspiracy hatched up by his step mother,
who had him thrown into a river, locked up in an iron
cage. Held in high esteem as a symbol of justice, a
temple was dedicated to him at Gwarail Chaur in Champawat
and ever since he has grown into a deity of great influence
attracting innumerable pilgrims around him.
MAYAWATI ASHRAM - 22 km from Champawat and 9-km from
Lohaghat, this ashram is situated at an altitude of
1940 meters. Mayawati shot into prominence after Advait
Ashram was established here. The ashram attracts spiritualists
from India and abroad. Amid and old tea Estate, is the
Advait Ashram of Mayawati. During his third visit to
Almora in 1898, Swami Vivekanand decided to shift the
publication office of 'Prabuddh Bharat' from Madras
to Mayawati, from where it is published since then.
The only presence that has become a part of the peace
and solitude of Mayawati, is that of the mighty Himalaya
in all its splendour. On request the Ashram provides
board and lodging to visitors. There is also a library
and a small museum at Mayawati.
VANASUR KA KILA - This is a fort at an elevation of
1859 mts. 7 kms from Lohaghat and 20 kms from Champawat
along the Bowali road, is the fort of Vanasur which
can be seen of all sides. The names of Shonitpur and
Lohawati are linked with the myth about the assassination
of Vanasur at this place. One has to walk about 2kms
to get to the fort. The fort seems to be a construction
belonging to the middle ages, but the story of Vanasur
was probably associated with the spot even before the
construction of the fort. Lohawati River originates
near this place.
ABBOT MOUNT - In 1914 Mr. Abbot built a bungalow in
a place, today known as Abbot Mount, which is situated
amidst a thick forest of oak and deodar. From Abbot
mount one gets a breathtaking view of the Himalayan
peaks. Today there are number spectacular of bungalows
built during the British Raj. Very close to the field,
which is situated at the Mount, various activities and
games, are held in order to encourage tourism. Close
by is the bungalow, which once belonged to the Abbots
amidst the deodar trees those they, had planted. One
can drive or walk up to the mount, which is 3 Km from
Marorakhan and 7km from Lohaghat.

temple dedicated to Kranteshwar Mahadev is situated
on the top of a lofty hill. It is also called Kurmapad
and Kandev.

a centre of historical and mythological importance.
In summer season Lohaghat is full of Rhododendron flowers.
REETHA - MEETHA SAHEB - From Dhunaghat (on the Lohaghat
-Devidhura road) one can visit Reetha Saheb or Meetha
Reetha, located at a distance of 72 kms from Champawat.
Guru Nanak is said to have visited this place and have
had spiritual discussions with Gorakhpanthi Jogis. The
Gurudwara was constructed in 1960 at the confluence
of Lodhiya and Ratiya rivers, near village Deyuri. There
are trees of sweet Reetha (Sapindus emarginatus) in
the Gurudwara premises, adjoining it is the temple of
Dhernath. Before the motor Road was build to Bhingrara,
people use to come to this place on foot. A fair is
held at the Gurudwara on Baisakhi Poornima.
DEVISDHURA - At distance of 45 kms from Lohaghat, Devidhura
is famous for its Barahi temples. A very unusual fair,
which attracts people from Kumoan, Nepal, and even other
places, is held every year at the temple of Barahi Devi
on Raksha Bandhan day. During this festival, known as
Bagwal, two groups of dancing and singing people throw
stones at each other, while they try to protect themselves
with the help of large wooden shields. The famous hunter,
Jim Corbett's tale 'Temple Tiger' is associated with
the Devidhura temples. Devidhura is situated amidst
tall deodar and oak trees surrounded by beautiful native
flora and fauna. This is a wonderful place for treking
and being one with the mountains.
PURNAGIRI - At a height of 3000 mts. above sea level,
Purnagiri is 20 kms from Tanakpur, 171 kms from Pithoragarh
and 92 kms from Champawat. Devotees visit Purnagiri
temple throughout the year from all parts of the country.
They come here in large numbers, particularly during
Chaitra Navratri in the month of March - April. The
surrounding valleys echo with the holy chanting of the
devotees climbing up to the top for darshan, creating
an atmosphere of spirituality. From Purnagiri, also
known as Punyagiri, the river Kali descends into the
plains and is known as Sharda. For visiting this shrine
one can go up to Thuligaarh by vehicle. From this place
one has to trek (the road is under construction up to
Tunyas). After the ascent of Bans ki Charhai comes Awalakhan
(the new name is Hanuman Chatti). The south - western
part of 'Punya Parvat' can be seen from this place.
Another ascent ends at the TRC of Tanki. The region
of temporary shops and residential huts start from this
place upto Tunyas. From the highest point (the temple)
of Purnagiri hill the pilgrim can see the expanse of
Kali, its islands, the township of Tanakpur and a few
Nepali villages. The old Buram Deo Mandi is very close
to Purnagiri. From Tanakpur or Purnagiri it is possible
to trek to Tamli and even to Jhulaghat along the Kali
River.
SHYAMLATAL - 1500 mts. above sea level, Shyamlatal
is 132 kms from Pithoragarh and 56 kms from Champawat.
Swami Vivekanand Ashram is located here at the bank
of the lake. The lake is spread over an area of about
one & a half sq. km. This place has some ruins dating
back to the days of the early Chand rulers and others,
which were associated with the Pandavas. Shyamlatal
is also famous for its Jhula fair. Different variety
of roses also attracts the travellers here.
PANCHESHWAR - 40 kms from Lohaghat at the confluence
of river Kali and Saryu, Pancheshwar forms the borders
with Nepal and is famous for the temple of Chaumu, its
fair and a dip at the confluence is considered to be
very sacred. The Jaat (jamaan) of Chaumu comes down
from villages Sail, 5 km. above the temple. Chaumu is
worshiped as a protector of animals. Bells and milk
are offered in the temple of Pancheshwar. Chaumu Jaat
of Pancheshwar has its unique way of cultural expression.
The temple at Pancheshwar is devoted to Lord Shiva.
Corbett
Corbett National Park has captured the imagination of
many with its diverse wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
The natural uniqueness of the area was recognised long
ago and so in 1936 Corbett attained the distinction
as the first national park to be established in mainland
Asia.
Corbett National Park lies in two districts - Nainital
and Pauri - in the hill state of Uttaranchal in northern
India. It covers an area of 521 sq. km and together
with the neighbouring Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and
Reserve Forest areas, forms the Corbett Tiger Reserve
over 1288 sq. km.
Its geographical location between the Himalayas and
the terrain, and the streams, rivers and ridges crisscrossing
the terrain, present Corbett with a remarkable variety
of landscapes. This vivid mosaic of habitats - wet and
dry, plain and mountainous, gentle and rugged, forests
and grasslands - supports numerous plant and animal
species, representing Himalayan as well as plains kinds.
The most famous of Corbett's wild residents are the
Bengal Tiger and the Asiatic Elephant, but with about
600 species of avifauna Corbett is one of the richest
bird regions of India.
Corbett isn't just about Nature. It is also a rich
treasure of history and cultural heritage. The park
has a long tradition of conservation. The fact that
it is the oldest National Park of the Asia and India's
first Tiger Reserve itself symbolises that Corbett is
a pioneer in efforts at preserving our natural heritage.
The great naturalist-writer Jim Corbett needs little
introduction. His writings have fascinated generations
of wildlife enthusiasts and he still commands no less
appeal nowadays. The areas in and around the present
day Corbett National Park were the stage for his exciting
adventures in wilderness. Most of his man-eater hunting
expeditions also took place in the same areas. Jim Corbett
lived in Kaladhungi, where his house has been made into
a Museum dedicated to his life and times.
Besides being located at a biogeographic confluence,
Corbett National Park is situated at the junction of
two distinct hill regions of Uttaranchal - Garhwal and
Kumaon. Hence, the Park represents a synthesis of cultures
of both these mountain areas.
General Information
Corbett has been a haunt for tourists and wildlife
lovers for a long time. Tourism is allowed in selected
areas of Corbett Tiger Reserve so that people get an
opportunity to see its splendid landscape and the diverse
wildlife living here.
In recent years the number of people coming here has
increased dramatically. Presently, every season more
than 70,000 visitors come to the park from India and
abroad.
Altitude : 385-1100 m above mean sea level
Annual rainfall : 1400-2800 mm
Area : 520.8sq.km.
Temperature : Max Min
Summer: 46°C 19°C
Winter: 25°C 4°C
When to Visit : Corbett remains open to tourists from
15th November to 15th June. The main reason for closure
of the Park during the rest of the year is that during
the monsoons most of the roads get washed away. Repair
work starts after the rains end and it is only by November
that roads are back in motorable condition.
Access
The town of Ramnagar forms the headquarters of Corbett
Tiger Reserve. It is well connected to important places
by road and rail.
By Road : Ramnagar is connected by road to Delhi, Moradabad,
Bareilly and Naintial. State transport buses ply regularly
from Delhi, Moradabad, Haldwani to Ramnagar. The approach
routes are:
Delhi-Gajrola-Moradabad-Kashipur-Ramnagar (240 km)
Bareilly-Kichha-Haldwani-Ramnagar (160 km)
By Rail : A direct train to Ramnagar runs from New
Delhi. Alternatively, one can come upto Haldwani/Kashipur/Kathgodam
and come to Ramnagar by road.
Tourism zones
For the convenience of visitors and streamlining tourism
management Corbett Tiger Reserve has been divided into
five mutually exclusive tourism zones, each having separate
gate for entry.
Tourism zone Gate

Corbett - Permits & Accommodation
Permits are necessary for entering Corbett Tiger Reserve.
For day visits permits are obtained at the respective
Entry Gates. However permits for night halts are issued
at the CTR Reception Office at Ramnagar.
Day visits to Dhikala Tourism zone are not permitted
except in conducted safari organized by Corbett Tiger
Reserve. Only visitors who have prior accommodation
reserved can enter Dhikala Zone. Visitors can move about
in vehicles inside the park area after making entries
at the respective gates. Tourists can drive their own
cars inside Corbett or can hire private Jeeps/Gypsies
from Ramnagar. It is advisable to refuel vehicles before
entering the park because there is no fuel station beyond
Ramnagar. Another option is to undertake a day-tour
conducted by the park on a safari bus. However, the
capacity for this facility is limited.
Walking or trekking inside the park is not allowed
except at certain places.
Specific trails for vehicles are maintained to enable
visitors to watch wildlife at Corbett. Driving off track
it is not allowed for reasons of safety. It is to be
noted that driving after sunset is strictly prohibited.
Accommodation
Gairal Forest Rest house (6 rooms - main buildings,
3 rooms - hutments) : This rest house is a favourite
with a lot of frequent visitors to the park. Even though
it is situated right on the eastern border between the
main and the reserve forest, it is one of the best locations.
Gairal is located just above the riverbank of the Ramganga
with high hills in every direction. It consists of three
totally different kinds of accommodations. These are
1) the old rest house, 2) the new rest house and 3)
the jungle huts. All evening and night, if you manage
to keep absolutely quiet and still in your balcony,
you can get to see a lot of animals. This includes tigers
and elephants. The best time for wildlife viewing from
here is summer. The riverbanks below Gairal are well
frequented by huge flocks of black cormorants too. Another
added attraction is the short drive required to see
the gharials and muggars at crocodile pool. Solar heated
water is now provided at Gairal during the cold winters.
Sultan Forest Rest House (2 rooms) : This is the closest
rest house to the Dhangari main gate. It is on the main
road and close to the gate. The surrounding area is
quite unique and picturesque.
Sarapduli Forest Rest House (2 rooms - main building,
2 rooms - hutments) : This is the most centrally located
rest house. The rest house itself is a pleasing sight
with a pretty large pack of resident jackals, which
keep moving about all day and night. It is located almost
on the main jungle road but far enough to blot out the
sounds of passing vehicles. Two other rooms (or huts
as they are called) are also available. Sarapduli is
well frequented by many animals due to the proximity
to the river in front.
Khinanauli Forest Rest House (3 rooms) : This rest house
is also centrally located but in a different sort of
way. It is centrally located in respect to all the exciting
spots in the park. The best tiger sighting locations
are situated all around it. It faces huge grassland
and has the river flowing by to the left. The rest house
itself is of excellent quality as it's visitors mainly
consist of senior Indian and foreign dignitaries. The
staff here is extremely warm and helpful. The rest house
has it's own ride elephant named Phoolkali (flower petal).
The rest house is also provided with two hours a day
of generator powered electricity. Solar heated water
is also available for the cold winters. The trees surrounding
Khinanauli are also excellent bird sighting locations.
Taking all aspects into consideration, this is probably
the best rest house of the park.
Dhikala Tourist Complex (30 rooms and 24 bunks): The
Dhikala complex is the largest accommodation facility
in the park. It has many rooms and it's own restaurant,
excellent library and dhaba (local canteen). It also
has elephant rides, which start, opposite the reception
area. With the exception of Kanda, this rest house provides
the largest view on every direction. It is located just
above the banks of the Ramganga River. In the evening,
for the entertainment and knowledge enhancement of the
visitors, a half hour film on wildlife is shown at the
open-air theatre. Another attraction that draws the
less adventurous to Dhikala is the fact that the rooms
have a constant supply of tap water and electricity.
Dhikala also has a variety of accommodations. These
range all the way from simple bunk dormitories to pretty
impressive luxury rooms.
Kanda Forest Rest House (2 rooms) : The most impressive
thing that draws visitors to it time and again is the
view it offers. The view is a full 360 degrees, except
for maybe a little bit just north of west. It looks
down upon the entire park and the Dhikala complex is
clearly visible from here. Due to its relatively high
altitude of 1085 meters above mean sea level, the cool
breeze makes it an excellent option for the summer months.
It being the only rest house in its area, the solitude
and peacefulness also make it extremely attractive to
those wanting to get away from the din of civilization.
The drive up to the rest house is also an adventurous
and exciting one. It is advisable to only try it in
a 4-wheel drive. This area has the highest population
density of leopards and Himalayan black bears in the
park. The lucky ones also get to see the mountain goat,
the Ghoral, which in Corbett is unique to this area.
One point to be kept in mind while staying at Kanda
is that it is necessary to pay the entrance fee for
the main park every time you have to go down to the
other lower areas. A couple of single rooms offering
spectacular views have also been built just below the
main rest house.
Halduparao Forest Rest House (2 rooms) : This rest house,
although it comes under the Sonanadi Wild life sanctuary,
is a must to keep as an option for the more adventurous
at heart. This rest house is located on the stretch
of land between the Palain and Sonanadi rivers just
short of where they meet up with the Ramganga reservoir.
Other than the beautiful solitude and peacefulness that
it offers, it is famous for one thing and one thing
alone. It is almost impossible not to see elephants at
extremely close range if you go there in the summer
months of April to June. The proximity to the rivers
is also another added attraction.
Bijrani Forest Rest House/Complex (6 rooms) : This complex
is located on the southern ridge of the park. This is
the only area where visitors are allowed into the park
for day visits. The complex itself is very similar to
the one at Dhikala. It has it's own restaurant and canteen.
The complex offers elephant rides into the surrounding
jungle. The area, even with the constant flow of humans,
still has a very healthy population of animals and birds.
The chances of spotting a sloth bear or the Dhole are
the best in this part of the park.
Malani Forest Rest House (2 Rooms) : This rest house
is located on the southern ridge and is closest to the
core area of the jungle. This core area is out of bounds
to any kind of intrusion by humans. The rest house sits
perched at the end of relatively small grassland in
comparison to the Dhikala chaur. It faces a valley created
by a rainwater stream. It is said by the forest guards
there that the area further upstream is a haven for
tigers and other animals. During summer, when there
is less grass on the bed of the stream, the rest house
offers quite a spectacular sight. In winters however,
the view is restricted to the rest house and it's own
grounds. The vehicle track leading up, through the grassland,
to the rest house is frequented a lot by various animals.
Particularly in the early hours of the morning. Due
to its remote location, it is a very quiet area and
an excellent getaway. One problem for those requiring
the basic facilities, there is no electricity, like
in most of the other rest houses too, but here even
the water has to be brought up from the stream in buckets.
It is however extremely difficult to get reservations
for it as it is mostly kept out of bounds to the common
man. An exciting place to visit in this area is the
jungle track running along the fire line.
The Mudiapani, Rathuadab and Lohachaur Forest Rest Houses(2
rooms each) : These rest houses are all located across
the northern side of the northern ridge. They are situated
on either side of the forest road that stretches all
the way across this part of the reserve forest area.
Rathuadab is located immediately beside the track and
is known to be well frequented by elephants in the summer
months. Lohachaur offers a panoramic view of the river
Mandal. The rest house located at the top of a steep
climb to the southern side of the main track. All three
of these rest houses are open throughout the year but
it is the Access routes that are the problem.
The monsoon waters wash away the stone and wood bridges,
spanning the many rainwater streams, every year. These
are then rebuilt only around the end of November.
Marchula Forest Rest House (2 rooms) : This forest rest
house is located outside the northeastern borders of
the main park. It is situated just above the Marchula
village built around a bridge, across the river Ramganga,

Corbett - Do's And Don'ts
Please enter the Park only after taking the necessary
permits and follow all the rules.
Please obtain services of Nature Guides that the Park
has trained for your benefit. They are of great help
to you in spotting wildlife and ensuring that you do
not lose your way in the forest.
Drive slowly in the Park. In this way you can see, observe
and enjoy the most, without disturbing wildlife.
Keep to the specified roads and trails. Driving off
track you may trample growing trees and cause disturbance
to resting animals and their young.
Respect the wild animals and maintain a safe distance
from them. Remember, you are in their home and they
get first priority.
Listen to the music of the forest instead of your car
stereo or transistor. The quieter you are, the more
the chances of your seeing wildlife.
Wear dull-coloured clothes. Bright colours alarm most
wild animals and they flee.
Don't carry guns. Feel free to shoot with a camera instead.
Do not smoke or light campfires in the forest. Accidental
fires can destroy this wonderful jungle in no time.
Don't get off your vehicle at any point in the Park
except where it's allowed. This is for your own safety
and the safety of wildlife.
The Park is not a zoo; so don't expect to see wildlife
everywhere. Corbett is breathtaking even in its scenery.
Do not be disappointed if you don't see a tiger. There
are many other interesting creatures that are to be
seen and cherished.
Having alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not allowed.
Help keep the park pollution-free. While inside the
park, please put your entire non-biodegradable litter
(tin cans, plastic, glass bottles, metal foils etc.)
into the bag provided and dispose of it on your way
out.
Dehradun
Nestled in the mountain ranges of the Himalaya, Dehradun
is one of the oldest cities of India and is recently
declared as the Provisional Capital of newly created
Uttaranchal State in the month of Nov'2000. Also known
as the 'abode of Drona', Dehradun has always been an
important center for Garhwal rulers, which was captured
by the British. The headquarters of many National Institutes
and Organizations like ONGC, Survey Of India, Forest
Research Institute; Indian Institute of Petroleum etc
are located in the city. Some of the premier educational
and Training Institutes like Indian Miltary Academy,
RIMC (Rashtriya Indian Military College), Indira Gandhi
National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Lal Bahadur Shahstri
National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) etc are
also there in Dehradun. It is a favoured tourist destination
as it attracts tourists, pilgrims and enthusiasts from
various walks of life to its serene environs. Add to
this the abundance of special Basmati rice, tea and
leechi gardens, which contribute in turning the city
into a paradise.
The district is named after its chief city Dehra Dun.
Dehra appears to be a corruption of dera signifying
a temporary abode or camp. During the reign of Aurangzeb,
Ram Rai, Guru of the Udasi Sikhs on being ordered by
the Mughal king to retire to the wilderness of the Dun,
had pitched his tents here in what is now the Khurbura
locality of the town and has also built a temple near
Dhanawala. Around these two sites, grew up the town
popularly known as Dehra. The term dun or doon means
the low lands at the foot of a mountain range, and as
the bulk of the district lies in such a terrain, it
justified the dun part of the name.
Another derivation of the term dun is stated to be
from Dronashram, hermitage of Guru Dronacharya of Mahabharata
fame, who sojourned for a season in the village of Devara,
situated near to Dehra to perform his devotions at a
lonely spot.
Dehradun, the city, headquarters of the district is
visited by a large number of tourist every year, many
of them en-route to Mussoorie. The climate of the city
is temperate. Even during summer, it is not so warm
at Dehra Dun as in the district south of it. The Forest
Research Institute, which is world famous for its research
work in forestry and is the only institution of its
kind in Asia is situated here. Besides, headquarters
of the important establishment like the Oil and Natural
Commission; Survey of India etc., the Military Academy
are also located here. The Gurudwara built by Guru Ram
Raj during the reign of Aurangzeb in the Dhamanwala
locality, o the town is a religious place of eminence.
The other place of importance is the Robber's cave,
situated at a distance of about 8 kms from Dehra Dun.
The cave is a natural picnic spot surrounded by hills
where water suddenly disappears from sight and goes
underground only to reappear after a few yards in the
form of a stream. The city has many beautiful rest houses
and good hotels to provide accommodation to the tourist.
For many years, it has been one of the best known educational
centres in northern India. Dehra Dun is well linked
by rail and road with Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Lucknow
and Varanasi.

the state.

north-west by the district of Uttarkashi, In the east
by the district Tehri Garhwal and Pauri-Garhwal. In
the south by the district of Saharanpur(Uttar Pradesh),

of Himachal Pradesh with the rivers Tons and Yamuna
separating the two.
Lies between 29 degrees 58' and 31 degrees 2' 30"
north latitudes and 77 degrees 34' 45" and 78 degrees

Gangotri

it is believed, Ganga, the stream of life, touched earth
for the first time. According to the Hindu religious
scriptures, the goddess manifested herself in the form
of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirathi's
sons, following his penance of several centuries. The
Goddess Ganga is worshipped by the devout as a deity.
The Gangotri temple was built in the early 18th century
by a Gorkha commander, Amar Singh Thapa and later rebuilt
by the Maharaja of Jaipur. By November, Gangotri is
snowbound, and so the deity is taken 25 kms downstream
to Mukhba, so that their devotees are not thwarted.
Despite the severe cold, however, several "SADHUS"
remain at Gangotri year round, even through the very
severe winter. Gaumukh, the identified source of the
river Ganga, is 18kms further uphill. The trek to Gaumukh
is gradual, and several pilgrims undertake the journey
to pay homage to the river at its known source. The

got its name Har ki Pauri as the Hindu God Hari descended
to this place. The glimpses of Ma Ganga have unique
significance here. The Hindus regard this Ghat as the
most sacred Ghat. It is also famous as Brahm kund. As
the name signifies, it is believed that the Hindu God
Brahma descended on this place and from that time this
place is known as Brahm kund. It is this Brahm kund
where every Hindu wishes to take a dip at least once
in lifetime to reserve a place in heaven. Har-ki-Pauri
is also the scene of a memorable ritual every evening.
After sunset, before disciplined ranks of devotees,

have a sacramental bath in the river Ganga. Though Har-ki-Pauri
is the most popular one, yet there are other bathing
ghats too. Bathing ghats, or steps, have been built

river so that devotees can bathe in safety. Dedicated

Mussoorie
The queen of hill stations is about 89 km from Haridwar
and the salubrious climate and deep woods make it an
ideal hill station. The name, Mussoorie, derives its
name from plants of 'Mussoorie', found in abundance
here. After its discovery, this place gradually developed
as a center of education, business, tourism and beauty.
The hill station of Mussoorie came into being around
the 1830s. What began as a small settlement grew into
a large station to turn into a hill station of today
overlooking the sprawling Doon valley and the city of
Dehradun. Mussoorie was not named after a place in England.
The British were content to follow the name given by
the hill-folk. Mussoorie, at a height of around 7000
ft above the sea level, straddles a ridge in the Garhwal
Himalayas, developing into a major tourism destination.

who took great fancy to this land. Moved by the beauty
of the sparkling lake he wrote: "It is by far the
best site I have witnessed in the course of a 1,500
miles trek in the Himalayas." It is very less is
known about the history of Nainital. The name "NAINI"
is derived from a temple to the goddess 'Naini Devi"

Naini Lake : This attribute lake is said to be one
of the emerald green eyes of Shiva's wife, Sati (naina
is Sanskrit for eye). When Sati's father failed to invite
Shiva to a family sacrifice, she burnt herself to death
in protest. Shiva gathered the charred remains in his
arms and proceeded to engage in a cosmic dance, which
threatened to destroy the world. To terminate the dance,
Vishnu chopped up the body into pieces, and the remains
were scattered across India. The modern Naina Devi Temple
at the northern end of the lake is built over the precise
spot where the eye is believed to have fallen.
Snow View : At the top, a close up view of Nanda Devi

a small marble temple dedicated to Dev Mundi housing

Gompa of the Gelukpa order (of which the Dalai Lama

by Gorkha GeneralAmar Singh Thapa in the 18th century,
is situated in the bank of Bhagirathi. It is visited
by lakhs of pilgrims every year. A number of Ashrams
are located on the other sites, some of which provides
accommodation facilities to the visitors. Tourist Bungalows,

Kedartal: This spectacular and enchanting lake is situated
at a distance of about 18 kms. from Gangotri, negotiable
through rough and tough mountain trail. The trek is
very tiring and there are testing moments even for a
hardy trekker. There is no facility of any kind on the
way and one has to make all arrangements in advance.
A local guide is a must. The lake is crystal clear with
the mighty Thalayasagar (spahatikling) peak forming
a splendid backdrop. The place is about 15000 feet of
sea level and is the base camp for trekking to the Thalayasagar,
Jogin, Bhrigupanth and other peaks.
Gaumukh: The Gaumukh glacier is the source of Bhagirathi
(Ganga) and is held in high esteem by the devouts who
do not miss the opportunity to have the holy dip in
the bone chilling icy water. It is 18 kms. from Gangotri.
The trek is easy and at times people come back to Gangotri
the same day. There is a Tourist Bungalow at Bhojbasa,
14 kms. from Gangotri where lodging and other facilities
are available.
Nandan-Van Tapovan: These two spots are situated opposite
the Gangotri glacier further up from Gaumukh, at a distance
of 6 kms. from where visitors can have a superb view
of the majestic Shivling peak. There are ideal spots
for camping and also provides base camps for Bhagirathi,
Shivling, Meru, Kedardom, Kharchakund, Satopant, Kalindi
Khal and many other snow peaks.
Yamunotri: The shrine of Yamunotri, source of river
Yamuna is situated in the direction opposite to Gangotri
and the road bifurcates and goes to Yamunotri from Dharasu,
a place between Rishikesh - Uttarkashi. Yamunotri can
also be visited via Mussoorie and Barkot. Situated at
an elevation of 3235 meters above sea-level, the shrine
of Yamunotri is one of the "Four Dhams" (four
pilgrimages) of Uttarakhand. The source of Yamuna lies
above 1 km. ahead at an altitude of about 4421 meters.
The approach is extremely difficult and pilgrims therefore
offer Puja at the temple itself. There are hot springs
close to the temple, a bath in them is very refreshing
after a tedious 13 kms. trek from Hanuman Chatti or
5 kms. from Janaki Chatti. Pilgrims can find accommodation
in the houses belonging to the "Pandas" or
the sole Dharamshala. Hanuman Chatti is the bus terminus
from where one has to trek 13 kms. to reach Yamunotri.
On the way one can stay at Janaki Chatti 8 kms. from
Hanuman Chatti. There are tourist bangalow, PWD and
Forest Rest Houses and Dharamshalas.
Yamunotri
Yamunotri, the source of the river Yamuna, is the westernmost
shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, located on a flank
of the Bandarpunch peak. The trek along the riverbank
is quite magnificent, dominated by a wide panorama of
mountains. It is said that the temple of Yamunotri was
built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the last decade
of the 19th century. In 1923 this was destroyed, with
only the idols left, and was rebuilt. It was once again
damaged in 1982. A hot water pool at Yamunotri is used
for the preparation of "PRASAD" normally rice
and potatoes, cooked by dipping them in the hot water,
tied in cloth bags.
