The ancient name for Esna was Iunyn or Ta-Senet, classical
Latopolis, 55km south of Luxor
- Temple of Khnum at Esna
Discovered by Auguste Mariette, it is well preserved.
Ptolemy VI (180-145 BC) to Decius (249-251 AD). It is
located just off the Nile, the hypostyle hall, built
during the reign of Claudius (41-54 AD), and nestled
in its large and deep excavation pit. Contemporary ground
level, built up by siltation from the Nile and by the
debris from two thousand years of continuous human occupation,
is indicated by the retaining wall and buildings at
the far left. The rest of the temple has not been excavated,
and remains buried 30 feet below the modern village.
The roof of the hypostyle hall is still intact, supported
by 24 columns each with varied floral capitals. To visit
the temple from 9 to 4 in the winter and from 9 to 5
in the summer time, you have to check in case your Nile
cruise schedule have enough time to stop in Esna as
most of Nile cruise do not stop for visit but for waiting
to cross the Esna Lock.
