- Bahariya
It consists of many villages of which Bawiti is the
largest and the administrative center. Qasr is Bawiti's
neighboring/twin village. To the east, about ten kilometers
away are the villages of Mandishah and el Zabu. A smaller
village called Aguz lies between Bawiti and Mandishah.
Harrah, the eastern most villages, is a few kilometers
east of Mandishah and el Zabu. Hiez is the last village,
but it may not always be considered as part of Bahariya
because it is so far from the rest of the villages,
about fifty kilometers south of Bawiti. Please note
the coordinates in the top-right corner and in the pane
to the right are incorrect. The coordinates (according
to Google Earth) are 28 degrees 20' N, 28 degress 51'
E.
- Kharga Oasis
A miniature jewel in the LIBYAN DESERT, called Uakt-rest,
the Outer or Southern Oasis, Kharga was also part of
"the OASIS ROUTE." Located some 77 miles southwest
of ASSIUT, Kharga contains temples and towns, including
HIBIS. A temple to AMUN was established there in the
reign of DARIUS I (521-486 B.C.E.) and refurbished in
later periods. This temple had an elaborate sacred lake.
And an avenue of sphinxes, other temples were built
in honor of ISIS, MUT, KHONS (2), and SERAPIS. Kharga,
the largest of the oases, was a vital TRADE outpost.
With the other oases it served as an agricultural resource,
a haven for fugitives, and in some historical periods,
a place of exile for individuals banned by the pharaoh.
- Hibis temple
In the ancient capital of the KHARGA OASIS, located
south of ASSIUT in the western desert, also called Hebet,
Hibis contained a temple started by DARIUS I (r. 521-486
B.C.E.) or DARIUS II (r. 424-404 B.C.E.) and completed
by NECTANEBO II (r. 360-343 B.C.E.). The rulers of the
Ptolemaic Period (304-30 B.C.E.) added decorations and
chambers. The temple was constructed in a grove and
had vivid relief and a rooftop shrine dedicated to the
god OSIRIS. A winged figure of SET, the fertility deity
Of the oasis, is also displayed. A Roman temple was
built on a nearby hill.
